EarthSong Community School

Mission Statement

The mission of EarthSong Community School is to empower children by nurturing a love of learning and a sense of responsibility in each of our students. We strive to create a community of learners who have self-confidence, respect for each other, their peers and their environment, and an awareness of the real impact each choice that we make has on ourselves and the world around us. We focus on each member of our community’s growth in body, mind and spirit.

Our traditional Montessori environment provides an abundance of opportunities for the development of physical and intellectual skills. Our focus on the strengths each individual possesses develops a sense of self-worth. Our cooperative approach to learning teaches us to support one another through our challenges and celebrate each of our successes. Our focus on the natural world, and our unique role within it, fosters a sense of stewardship.

Love of Learning Starts Early

EarthSong offers two learning programs for children of different ages:

Primary Class: Children between the ages of 3 and 6 are in a critical period of exploration. Much of what they encounter they are experiencing for the first time as they form their initial impressions of the world around them and learn the names of the things they encounter. At EarthSong our classroom is specifically designed to be inviting, engaging, and developmentally stimulating for our students.

The classroom is divided into seven major curriculum areas: language, math, science, geography/history/culture, practical life, sensorial, and art. The children are free to explore the curriculum throughout the work cycle, with the guidance and support from their teachers. Children work with the materials both individually and in small groups. A typical day is a combination of working with teachers and freely choosing the work they enjoy.

Elementary Class: Children between ages 6 and 12 are in a sensitive period for social development. It is at this stage of life that Montessori believes children begin to question not just the “whats” of the world around them but the “whys” and “hows”. These questions inspire our students as they explore the language, math, science(including chemistry, physics, astronomy, zoology, botany, and earth science), geography, history, art, and practical life areas of the curriculum.

In addition to our academic focus the Elementary Program nurtures each student’s growth as a member of a community. Within the classroom special emphasis is placed on fostering the values of empathy, kindness and inclusion.

By giving children the freedom to learn about the things that are interesting to them, learning becomes engaging and fun because it is relevant. Our goal is to prepare our students to be successful learners and welcomed community members throughout their lifetime.
